Heralding spring: green shoots

Although for meteorologists spring has started March 1, for me spring arrives with the Spring Equinox. This year this will be March 20. As the soil is warming up and the sun is gaining strength some early plants are raring to go, producing the first green shoots and delicate flowers.

The dainty white blooms of the crocus (left) are poking through the lawn, the leaves, barely distinguishable from the blades of grass around them. Clumps of snowdrops (middle) have suddenly all come out with flowers after the gray and cold weeks. Now that the ornamental grass has been cut back the white flowers of the Christmas Rose or Hellebore (right) present themselves in all their glory.
